A makeup diary

I was a no-makeup enthusiast in my teens, a time when wearing makeup can be misjudged by others.

By others I mean elders, peers and classmates, having come from an era when makeup was just for moms who wear colors only on special occasions and work.

Ordinary days in high school were simply maintained by wearing Johnson's powder and lipbalm if the budget permits.

Then, my friends and I did not make an effort to apply  makeup.
The company of my peers would suffice to bring fun to my youthful days.

There was no You Tube to watch tutorials with, no Bobby Brown books for makeup 101 and no free workshop when you buy makeup brushes, stuff that are accessible to beauty junkies of this techy generation.

Ah missing those days when one can choose to be simple and unadorned and not be under esteemed for choosing to be so.

College have been pretty much still uncomplicated albeit, I remember the only makeup must-have for me was a lipstick or a lipgloss, and a curlash, which to my friends' amazement I can skillfully use even while riding a moving car or sitting in the middle of a theater prepping up, before we get out at the movie's end.

Such a kitsch for curlash even when I have not heard of the wonders of a Shue Emura curlash.

Come to think of it,  I was also "kikay" back then, despite my geekiness.

Now I am a forty-something mom who considers myself a newbie at makeup given the current trends.

Admittingly,  I may not be as learned when it comes to applying full makeup with such flair and expertise like Ann Clutz and Purple Heiress, popular Pinay you tubers from whom I get my daily dose of makeup diversion, but I am getting there.

And I'm doing this not as a shallow penchant to join makeup trends but as a way to keep me creatively glued; as a woman in my forties trying to look for beauty amid the clutter of domestic duties and heeding the need of the girl in me to keep the days of my youth at heart, one pastel or one palette at  time.
